Mary Tyler Moore has died at age 80, report multiple outlets. The actress was best known for The Dick Van Dyke Show and her own sitcom, The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

A source told TMZ earlier today that Moore had been in the hospital on a respirator for more than a week. But it became critical, and soon, family members arrived at the hospital to say goodbye.

The Hollywood legend was diagnosed with Type I diabetes at age 33. In 2011, she underwent brain surgery to remove a meningioma, a benign brain tumor.

In 2014, friends reported that Moore had heart and kidney problems and was nearly blind. The following year, her former co-star Dick Van Dyke commented that diabetes “has taken a toll on her; she’s not well at all.”

Sadly, Mary Tyler Moore has died at the Connecticut hospital where she was listed in critical condition. Her longtime representative Mara Buxbaum released the following statement:

“Today, beloved icon, Mary Tyler Moore, passed away at the age of 80 in the company of friends and her loving husband of over 33 years, Dr. S. Robert Levine. A groundbreaking actress, producer, and passionate advocate for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Mary will be remembered as a fearless visionary who turned the world on with her smile.”

Moore leaves behind only her friends and her husband. Her only child, son Richard Meeker Jr. died age 24 of an accidental gunshot to the head when he was handling a shotgun. The model was later taken off the market.

When Moore miscarried with what would have been her second child in 1966, she learned that she was diabetic.

In addition to her work with diabetes foundations, Moore was also an animal activist and was a pioneer of Hollywood. Her character Mary Richards in The Mary Tyler Moore Show was one of the first shows to be centered around a never-married, working woman in the 70’s.
