Normally a child’s birthday is cause for celebration! But in the Duggar family, a kid’s birthday is basically just another Sunday.
Jordyn-Grace Makiya Duggar celebrated her eighth birthday this past Sunday. Jim Bob and Michelle took their second-youngest out to Acambaro, a Mexican restaurant.
Going to Acambaro is apparently the only thing young Jordyn wanted to do on her special day…and after watching this birthday video the Duggars shared, it makes sense.
At the restaurant, Michelle and Jordyn stood up in front of the family while Michelle praised her daughter. “Jordyn is such a wonderful little helper and is always willing to serve others! She has such a loving heart and we wanted to say that we love you, Jordyn!”
Michelle continued to talk about Jordyn. “She’s always willing to jump in and help. She loves, loves, loves to carry little babies on her hip. She is instant friends with a baby. When she sees a baby in the room, she immediately makes friends. Jordyn, we are so thankful for your sweet, loving spirit and your heart to serve.”
Though the words may sound very nice at first, throughout the entire video, Jordyn is either chewing her gum while staring off into the distance or simply standing still like a catatonic robot.
Jordyn’s bizarre behavior was not lost on Duggar fans who then accused Michelle of not knowing her daughter at all. One fan wrote, “This is the saddest Duggar video I have ever seen. The child seems not to even know who her mother is, and on her special day, she gets no recognition beyond that she’s preparing well for her sole role in life as a baby maker.”
Another fan wrote, “This video is so sad OMG Michelle do you even know this child? A baby on her hip?? Really? She’s 8 years old! She should not be walking around with a baby on her hip. Her back bones and muscles are still developing.”
For Jordyn’s seventh birthday last year, Michelle wrote a nearly identical spiel on the family blog, praising Jordyn for helping with “laundry, dishes, cleaning, organizing, playing with younger ones and helping other mommies with their little ones!”
Followers of the Duggar family wonder if this disconnect between mother and child is a result of the Duggar ‘buddy system,’ in which the older daughters are expected to care for their younger siblings called “buddy teams.” After a baby was weaned, Michelle would hand the child over to a buddy team leader.
