Earlier this year Eva Mendes experienced MANY facets of life. First, the actress and her family suffered the loss of her brother in April. He died of throat cancer at 53 years old. Then, on April 29, Eva and Ryan Gosling welcomed their second daughter, Amada Lee Gosling.
The two were already parents to Esmeralda Amada Gosling, born in 2014. But as the notoriously private couple were getting ready for Amada Lee, they were also burdened by the knowledge that Eva’s brother Carlos was not doing well.
Eva opened up to Latina magazine about that emotional time. She told the magazine that Carlos’ death only brought their already close knit family even closer, and that they also supported her during Amada’s birth. “So to just see everybody be there for one another and show up, I feel so lucky to have them…. We had a funeral service for him and that same week I had the baby. So it was really, really intense and obviously beyond heartbreaking, but also kind of beautiful.”
With the loss so recent, Eva admits she hasn’t “really processed that yet,” but she stays grounded with the help of her family and longtime boyfriend Ryan Gosling.
The closeness of Eva’s family is also reflected in her own children. Her two daughters share the name Amada, a common Latin practice that she had to explain to Ryan. The name Amada actually comes from Eva’s grandma. “So we went with Amada because it was something we kept going back to. And it was an emotional time with the passing of my brother. We thought, how beautiful to go with what made us emotional and with what felt like her. When we looked at her, we thought, ‘Aww, Amadita.’”
In fact, Amada was almost named Eva! Eva Mendes is named after her own mother, but she and Ryan decided a third Eva would be “a bit much.”
And all the Evas and Amadas in the family make for “a really strong support system,” which will no doubt help each other through the grief of losing Carlos, and the joy of getting to know Amada Lee.
